Let Go of Comparison

Your Yoga Practice Isn't a Competition: How to Measure Progress Without Comparing Yourself

Ever looked around the yoga room and wondered how someone else makes a posture look so effortless while you're just trying to keep your balance? You're not alone.

It's easy to compare your flexibility, strength, or balance to the person next to you. But you don't know their journey, and their progress has nothing to do with yours.

Your yoga practice is yours. And progress looks different for everyone.

Progress Is More Than a Posture

In Bikram Yoga, it's easy to measure progress by how deep you go into a posture or how long you can hold it. But progress can look like:

  • Finding your balance when you used to step out.

  • Staying calm when a class gets challenging.

  • Breathing more steadily through a posture.

  • Knowing when to rest instead of pushing harder.

  • Showing up consistently, even when motivation is low.

Not every improvement is visible. Sometimes, the biggest changes happen in how you feel.

Focus on Your Own Practice

Practicing alongside others can be motivating, but try not to turn someone else's abilities into your personal benchmark.

Instead of asking, Why can't I do that? ask yourself, What can I learn from my practice today?

The Bikram Yoga series repeats the same 26 postures and two breathing exercises, giving you the opportunity to notice changes over time. Some days you'll feel stronger and more balanced. Other days, familiar postures might feel challenging again. Both are part of the process.

You don't have to make progress in every class. You just have to give yourself the opportunity to keep learning.

Set Goals That Work for You

Rather than focusing on what someone else can do, set goals that reflect your own practice.

  • Build consistency. Choose a schedule you can realistically maintain.

  • Focus on one thing. Work on your balance, breathing, or alignment.

  • Notice how you feel. Pay attention to your energy and focus before and after class.

  • Celebrate small wins. Recognize improvements, even when they're subtle.

  • Give yourself grace. Your body and energy won't feel the same every day.

Remember, challenging yourself doesn't mean pushing through everything. Listening to your body and knowing when to rest are important parts of a sustainable practice.
